Ludwigslust is situated on the Ludwigslust Canal, an artificial waterway connecting the Stör Canal and the Rögnitz. The city area includes extensive forests, meadows, and orchards, including a large deciduous forest to the west and coniferous forest on the outskirts of the city. The small town is located in the Ludwigslust-Parchim district of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, 35 kilometers south of Schwerin and on the eastern edge of the Griese Gegend region.
