Historic Vehicles in Kobrow II

The Mecklenburg Carriage Museum houses more than 200 carriages, wagons and sleighs. Its collection is among the largest and most significant carriage collections in Germany. The holdings also include children's carriages, as well as commercial and military vehicles. The exhibits date from 1820 to 1950. This makes it possible to view the different groups of vehicles within a clearly defined historical period.

The museum is open Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. As opening hours may change seasonally, check them before your visit. Museum guides lead tours of the exhibition by prior arrangement.

Tour 4: Lake Views and Waterbirds

Tour 4 offers views of Hofsee and Schönfelder See. Just before the south shore, a narrow path leads to a bathing spot with benches and a jetty. It is also an ideal place to watch many waterbirds. The municipality of Kobrow lies on Hofsee; together, the lake views, shoreline and birdwatching give the route a distinct focus on the landscape.

The wider destination of Ludwigslust-Parchim offers other distinct cultural and nature highlights. Ludwigslust Palace was the former residence of the Mecklenburg dukes and, together with its park and town, forms an ensemble known as the “Little Versailles of the North.” The palace stands at the heart of an almost completely preserved late Baroque townscape, with a former court church and an English-style landscaped park. The palace presents art and courtly domestic culture from the 18th and early 19th centuries.

Another cultural attraction is the museum in Dömitz Fortress. It covers the history of the fortress and town, as well as the history of the Elbe, the harbour and bridges, and Fritz Reuter. Architecture is also a central feature in Dömitz: the citadel is a Renaissance fortress built on the Italian model, with a pentagonal layout, bastions, casemates and a drawbridge.

At Zarrentin Abbey, guided tours explore the history of the former Cistercian nunnery, the lives of the nuns and the building's architecture. Check current information for dates and access. The ground floor also houses a permanent exhibition about the abbey. Another nature highlight is the calcareous fen near Zarrentin, which is part of the Schaalelauf Nature Reserve. Visitors can discover the fen from the nature trail.

The Müritz-Elde Waterway offers another way to experience the water, with water sports practised in the Ludwigslust-Parchim district. Dömitz has its own harbour, with moorings for all types of watercraft used for water sports. Passenger boats operated by the Heckert shipping company also depart from Dömitz; check the current timetable before travelling.
