Göhlen lies around nine kilometres west of Ludwigslust in the “Griesen Gegend” region; its landscape includes extensive pine forests, meadows and grain fields. At the same time, the village has 25 prehistoric and early historic archaeological sites, including the remains of more than 500 bloomery furnaces, iron slag and a blacksmith’s workplace.

History

A reconstructed bloomery furnace in Göhlen illustrates the historical smelting of bog iron ore using wood and peat, as practised there in the 4th and 5th centuries. Göhlen’s first written mention is dated to 1450; its older Slavic name is said to have been Goilna.

Göhlen has no church building of its own and belongs to the Evangelical Lutheran parish of Leussow. Church services and Bible weeks are held in a community room. The local heritage includes rural cultural traditions, as well as an anniversary programme from 2005 featuring an exhibition, a historical fashion show and a procession.
