River Landscapes and Habitats

Brahlstorf railway station is centrally located in the Mecklenburg part of the UNESCO Flusslandschaft Elbe M-V Biosphere Reserve. The wider travel region is shaped by a near-natural lowland river, an extensive river floodplain, and numerous tributaries. Its landscape encompasses a range of habitats: wet areas include flood zones and groundwater seepage areas, oxbow lakes, former river channels, and fens. There are also drier biotopes, such as Elbe riverbank slopes, inland dunes, and heathland. Remnants of natural floodplain and wetland forests complete this mosaic.

Nature lovers will find more than just one type of landscape here. The river floodplain and tributaries sit alongside wet lowlands, dry habitats, and remnants of woodland. This diversity describes the biosphere reserve as a larger region; it should not be taken as a statement about any particular section of a route. The cycle route to Neuhaus and the landscape of the reserve are also two distinct points of interest to explore when discovering Brahlstorf.

Cycling Along the Former Narrow-Gauge Railway

The cycle path starts at Brahlstorf railway station and leads directly into the Elbe lowlands near Neuhaus. For the most part, it follows the route of a narrow-gauge railway. The former line from Brahlstorf towards Neuhaus is 10.67 kilometres long, and many structures have been preserved along it. This length refers to the former railway line, not to a longer day trip.

The narrow-gauge railway connection is also part of the town’s history: the Neuhaus–Brahlstorf line connected to the Hamburg–Berlin main line. This makes it possible to link today’s cycling route with the former railway connection without treating them as the same mode of transport. Visitors interested in regional transport and railway history can appreciate the preserved structures along the former line as a distinct feature of the landscape.

A Designed Space at the Railway Station

At Brahlstorf Biosphere Railway Station, the newly redesigned underpass adds a splash of colour. It was officially opened on 13 June 2015 and is decorated with 200 colourful pictures. The pictures were created by groups, individuals, and institutions. The underpass is therefore not only a named part of the station but also a space designed by the community. The large number of pictures and the range of contributors make this spot at the station a distinctive cultural feature alongside the cycle path and narrow-gauge railway history.

Another architectural feature is located in Brahlstorf cemetery: on its slightly elevated section, which is covered with trees and bushes, stands a chapel-like funeral hall. Its setting and appearance are quite different from those of the railway station area. Together with the decorated underpass, it shows that the local points of interest are not limited to the surrounding river landscape.

Getting Here and Choosing Where to Stay

The UNESCO Flusslandschaft Elbe M-V Biosphere Reserve can be reached by long-distance Deutsche Bahn services via Berlin, Hamburg, and Schwerin, with Brahlstorf as the destination station. When planning your trip, you can therefore consider whether your stay will be shaped primarily by getting to the station, the cycle path towards Neuhaus, the river landscape’s nature, or the history of the narrow-gauge railway. From Brahlstorf, it is about 30 kilometres by bicycle to Zarrentin in the UNESCO Schaalsee Biosphere Reserve. This approximate distance provides an additional point of reference for cycling travellers without specifying a particular route or travel time.
