Bretziner Heath gives Bengerstorf a distinctive natural character. A 34-hectare FFH site lies within the municipality; it is also a nature reserve on the edge of the Flusslandschaft Elbe M-V Biosphere Reserve. An old heathland site, the area lies between the Schaale and Boize valleys in rolling glacial moraine terrain. Bretziner Heath: Landscape and Conservation
Open heathland and sandy nutrient-poor grassland are surrounded by pioneer woodland, with pronounced wavy hair-grass encroachment in places. The contrast between open areas and young woodland shapes the character of the protected area and makes its natural features tangible.
The care of this landscape also offers a direct connection to the area. Every year, the Municipality of Bengerstorf and the Förderverein Biosphäre Elbe MV invite people to take part in a landscape conservation workday in the nature reserve. Donkey Hikes and Nature Experiences
The EselPfad in Groß Bengerstorf offers hikes accompanied by donkeys. Options include discovery, taster, cross-country and leisurely tours, as well as individual tours. The donkey hikes are suitable for families and groups of up to twelve people. On the discovery and leisurely tours, the routes in Bretziner Heath Nature Reserve lead to burial mounds and beaver lodges; partners of the biosphere reserve treat participants to a picnic of culinary delights. Information Boards, Building History and Village Culture
A total of four information boards in the local districts provide information about the region’s nature and history. Boards were installed and unveiled in 2024, covering topics including Bretziner Heath, the River Schaale, cranes and the pollarded beech. The origins of Wiebendorf’s distinctive architecture are also covered. Together, these topics bring the municipality’s landscape, nature and local history into focus.
In Groß Bengerstorf, an inscription on the lintel above the gate in the front gable of Hufe XIII dates the house to 1632. It names the village mayor, Jochen Manke, as the client and carpenter Albrecht Mutel as the builder. The date of construction is thus accompanied by two named roles; the inscription connects architectural history with the people involved in building the house.
The local chronicle describes “Teich und Töne” as a cultural event held every year on the first weekend in October at the central village pond in Groß Bengerstorf.
