Kummerow: Castle History and Time by the Lake

Kummerow combines the history of a castle and a medieval village church with a sandy beach on Lake Kummerow. When planning your stay, you can decide whether to focus on architectural and church history or on swimming and spending time by the water.

Castle History and Village Church

Kummerow Castle was completed in 1730. Its history is closely linked to the fortunes of the widely dispersed von Maltzahn family. The medieval village church offers a different perspective on Kummerow’s history: it has a rich Baroque interior and three tombstones belonging to members of the Mecklenburg noble family von Maltzahn. The organ also has a clear historical date: it was made in 1854 at the Grüneberg workshop in Stettin.

Several historical layers come together at the church: the medieval building, the Baroque furnishings and the 19th-century organ. The tombstones also bear the von Maltzahn family name, which is linked to the history of the castle as well. Anyone interested in the town’s history can consider these different connections side by side, rather than associating Kummerow with just one building.

Lake Kummerow and the Beach

Lake Kummerow takes its name from Kummerow because historically most of the lake belonged to Kummerow. It is the fourth-largest lake in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and also marks the historic boundary between Mecklenburg and Western Pomerania. This context connects the town’s name with the lake’s history and its location on the border.

Kummerow Beach is a sandy beach on Lake Kummerow and is a pleasant place to swim and spend time. This offers a concrete waterside experience alongside the historical attractions. You can therefore focus your trip on the castle and church or on time at the beach, without having to exclude either.
