Gielow is situated around 6.5 kilometres east of Lake Malchin. The Ostpeene erosion valley lies east of Gielow. The municipality places importance on preserving and maintaining its natural habitats.

Culture and History
The coat of arms of Gielow features a horseshoe symbolising traditional agriculture. It also refers to the municipality’s former affiliation with the Cistercian monastery in Dargun.
