Vimmerby: City History and the Culture Trail
Accommodation in Vimmerby
Vimmerby is best explored through its cultural history and specific places. The Stadsmuseet Näktergalen presents local history; the Culture Trail passes historic sites, while Lake Nossen, with its lawns and sandy beach, offers a different experience. The themes also differ in form: the museum and architectural history sit alongside a five-kilometre walking trail and a stay by the water. Astrid Lindgren’s biography and the settings of her stories open up a distinct literary theme.
Cultural history in a park, museum and church
The Stadsmuseet Näktergalen is a cultural history museum in Vimmerby that presents local history. It is housed in an 18th-century building with timber cladding and a log-built structure. Preserved Baroque paintings can be found on the ceilings and walls, and are characteristic of the town. The museum thus brings together two aspects: the presentation of local history and a historic interior with its preserved furnishings.
Källängsparken in Vimmerby is a unique park dating from the 1950s. In the summer of 2010, it was declared a listed building. Alongside the historic buildings, this adds a park whose period of origin differs markedly from the town’s older architectural history.
Vimmerby Church also brings together different periods of construction. Its current floor plan dates back to a new building erected between 1854 and 1857; the walls of the previous building were reused on the east side. The pulpit comes from the earlier church and was made in 1713 by Olof Wiström and Anders Cornelius. It was retained during the restoration of 1899. The dates therefore refer to different parts of the history: 1854 to 1857 for the new building, and 1713 for the creation of the pulpit. Together with the reused walls, these details show that the building and its furnishings each have their own historical layers.
The Culture Trail as a walking route
The Culture Trail is a five-kilometre walking route through historically significant terrain of great cultural value. It leads to the well-preserved buildings on Storgatan and passes Warmbadhuset, Astrid Lindgren’s Näs and the Stadsmuseet Näktergalen. Unlike the museum, the focus here is not on a single institution but on a route with several named stops. Its length gives a clear sense of scale; the trail therefore differs from a single building as the focus of cultural history.
Astrid Lindgren’s biography and stories
When it comes to Astrid Lindgren, it is worth distinguishing between biographical connections and literary settings. Astrid Lindgren was born on 14 November 1907 at the Näs farm and grew up there with three siblings and the other children. Astrid Lindgren’s Näs includes a garden park inspired by her life and literary work. Astrid Lindgren’s World focuses on the stories: imaginatively designed play areas and settings invite visitors to play, and visitors can immerse themselves in the scenes from Astrid Lindgren’s stories. A biographical approach and a playful engagement with the stories thus stand alongside one another as distinct themes.
Sandy beach and practical information
Lake Nossen is within the town of Vimmerby and offers large lawns as well as a sandy beach. This provides a different focus from the museum, church architecture or walking trail: here, green spaces and the beach form the specific landscape theme. Vimmerby’s tourist office is currently on the ground floor of the town hall. If you plan to rely on this location, it is advisable to confirm it in advance.
