Vassmolösa: Gropen, Trails and Local History
Accommodation in Vassmolösa
Vassmolösa can be explored through specific travel interests: Would you like to plan a connection to Kalmar, visit the Gropen recreation area or learn about the town’s history? The answers lead to different sides of the town: the cycle path and regional bus, a former gravel pit with a cultural trail and toboggan run, and traces of railway and roadside inn history. This lets you choose the focus of your stay, whether nature, local experiences or history.
Connections towards Kalmar
Regional bus services operate in the area around Vassmolösa and Hagby; the journey to the centre of Kalmar takes about 30 minutes. This should be understood as an approximate duration. Check the timetable before travelling if you plan to use this connection. A cycle path also runs through the area via Ljungbyholm and continues into the city of Kalmar. This gives you two different details to help plan your journey: an approximate bus travel time and the route of a cycle connection.
Gropen: recreation in a former gravel pit
Friluftsområdet Gropen was created from Vassmolösa’s former gravel pit, which was transformed into an accessible recreation area. A cultural trail was established there, among other things. For winter use, there is also a floodlit toboggan run. The site’s former use and its transformation into a recreation area therefore cater to different leisure interests. The toboggan run is clearly identified for winter planning, while the cultural trail adds a cultural dimension to the area.
Animals and farm produce
At Annas Gårdsbutik och Mejeri, visitors can see turkeys, ducks and chickens. They can also learn about and sample milk and meat from the farm. Animal watching and tastings offer two different ways to experience a farming destination: you can observe the animals and also discover the farm’s produce. This is another option for anyone who wants to explore local products as well as trails and local history during their stay.
Railway history and present-day status
The old railway station in Vassmolösa was built in 1899, when the Kalmar–Torsås railway line opened. The station building was extended in 1907, and in 1929 it also housed a post office. The railway, extension and post office mark successive stages in the building’s history. Today it is a private home and should not be planned as a publicly accessible visitor destination. Nevertheless, its railway history remains a distinctive part of the town’s history.
Burial ground and early roadside inn
North of the Vassmolösa inn is a large burial ground with 140 graves, 112 of which are stone settings. Vassmolösa was probably the site of a very old inn; a stopping place for travellers existed here at least before the 17th century. Local travel history thus stretches from the early stopping place to the railway station, which was built in 1899 when the railway line opened. The burial ground, inn tradition and railway station offer different ways to explore the town’s history.
