In Bergkvara, maritime history, cultural sites, and paths by the water offer different starting points for a stay. The Sjöfartsmuseum (Maritime Museum) focuses on port work and seafaring; historic buildings and art add to the cultural experience. For time outdoors, there is a history walk, trail sections with named endpoints, and a boat and canoe route.

Maritime History at the Sjöfartsmuseum

The Bergkvara Sjöfartsmuseum is housed in a hundred-year-old port warehouse with sweeping views of the sea. The ground floor contains a complete boatbuilding workshop. Photographs and objects illustrate the importance of eel fishing since the Middle Ages, as well as the role of pilotage and lighthouses. The maritime theme therefore ranges from boatbuilding to fishing and navigation at sea. The sea views and the exhibits offer different focal points.

Cultural Sites and Building History

Local history can also be read in the buildings. Höglundska huset was moved to Bergkvara Hembygdspark in 1946. Bergkvara kapell was built in 1958 to designs by architect Sigvard Ullén; its tall walls are somewhat reminiscent of medieval fortified churches. Kulturmagasinet is housed in the warehouse buildings of a shipowner’s estate dating from the mid-19th century. It includes three studios, a printmaking workshop, and an art gallery. Bergkvara Konsthall presents exhibitions featuring works by professional artists. In summer, Kulturmagasinet offers art and cultural courses for beginners and advanced participants in collaboration with Torsås Municipality.

History Walks and Trail Sections

“I sjöfartens spår-Bergkvara” is a walk through Bergkvara’s maritime history. Along the route, information boards at the stops provide additional details about the locations. The focus is on local history; the boards add information about each stop along the way.

Section KS8 of the Kalmarsundsleden runs 14.2 kilometers from Stufvenäs to Bergkvara. This makes it possible to compare a themed trail through Bergkvara’s history with a section that has a specified length and named endpoints. Lionsleden also has a distinct historical connection: it runs between Torsås and Bergkvara along a former railway embankment and was converted into a walking and cycling path in 2010. Here, the former railway line shapes the route’s history.

Badudden and Routes on the Water

At Badudden in Bergkvara, there are basic changing cabins, and a walking trail runs alongside. Another option is the boat and canoe route along the coast between Bergkvara and the Örarevet Nature Reserve. The modes of travel are clearly different: a walking trail at Badudden and a coastal route for boats and canoes.

A specific destination for a boat trip is Garpens Fyrplats. From the marina in Bergkvara, the Fyrplats can be reached by boat Gustav in about 15 minutes; the trip is weather-dependent. If you are planning this excursion, it is therefore advisable to check the latest information before making the crossing a fixed part of your itinerary.
