Industrial History and Buildings

Storebro Bruk was founded in 1728 by Wilhelm Mauritz Pauli. Another milestone in the town’s history is 1860, when Storebro saw the transition to the mechanical workshop industry. The founding of the business and the industrial transformation are two distinct historical points of reference for the town.

Buildings and landmarks also give the town’s history concrete dates. Storebro kyrka is a wooden church dating from 1969; it was built on site in a single day, on 24 March. Another cultural landmark is Visans Skepp, built in Storebro between 1978 and 1988. Together, these sites show that the town’s history spans several centuries and is not limited to industry alone.

River Location and Walking Trail

Storebro is located where the Stångån changes direction and flows north. The course of the river is therefore also a point of reference in the town. If you would like to combine a walk with a local history theme, you can include Storebro’s forest-history walking trail in your plans. It is 2.5 km long and focuses on forest history, offering a different emphasis from the town’s architectural and industrial history.

Cycling and Swimming Spots

The Storebro–Solnen cycling loop runs from the centre of Storebro towards Solnehult and reaches the swimming spot at Solnen about halfway along the route. The loop alternates between paved roads, gravel roads and a few trail sections. A trail section of about 600 metres can be wet in spring and after rain; some rock slabs can be slippery when wet. Seasonal traffic and trail conditions may also vary, so check the current situation before setting off.

The Storebrorundan offers another cycling route: it runs from Vimmerby Torg towards the industrial site of Storebro. It mostly follows paved roads, with short sections on gravel roads. By contrast, the Storebro–Solnen cycling loop combines several types of surface, including trails. This difference may help you choose a route if the trail surface is important to your plans.

The swimming spot at Dammen is on municipal land. A municipal record from 2022 lists this location; details at the swimming spot may change. Check the current situation before visiting. The swimming spot at Solnen, by contrast, is a stopping point on the Storebro–Solnen cycling loop.

Getting Here and Other Activities

Storebro has regular bus connections, particularly with Vimmerby, Hultsfred and Västervik. If you are taking bus connections into account when choosing where to stay, check the current timetables before travelling. These connections provide a useful guide when planning journeys between Storebro and these destinations.

Disc golf may also be worth considering when planning your trip: you can submit a request to book an instructor via the Storebro Discgolf Park website. This adds another activity to choose from alongside local history, a walk or a cycling trip.
