Pelarne is characterised by a very hilly, relatively open landscape with extensive arable land and pasture. It is also home to the church village, an Iron Age burial ground and a fortification. Together, these places give the destination a clear focus on cultural history and archaeology. Paths and nearby Mossjön just outside the village add to the range of interests to consider when planning a trip.

Church and church village

Pelarne Church was probably built in the early 13th century. Together with the church village, it forms the main criterion for an area designated as being of national interest for its cultural environment. The designation therefore recognises more than the church as a single building: the church village is also part of the cultural context.

In summer, Pelarne Church is usually open as a wayside church, with services, coffee and sales. If you plan to take advantage of these offerings, check when they are available before your trip.

Landscape and archaeological sites

The open, hilly landscape of arable land and pasture provides the setting for the historic sites. An Iron Age burial ground is located on Pelarne kulle. It represents a much earlier period than the church, which was probably built in the early 13th century. Pelarne therefore brings together different historical periods: the church village and the archaeological traces on the hill.

There is also a fortification in the area around Pelarne, measuring 220 × 70 metres. Steep rock faces form its boundaries, while stone walls serve this purpose where the slopes are less steep. A marked path leads to the site from opposite the large erratic boulder Toppesten. The path provides a clear point of reference when planning a visit.

Paths, lake and practical information

The 18-kilometre feeder trail of Sevedeleden, Stage 4 between Mossebo and Lönneberga, passes Pelarne Church. If you plan to follow this route, check the route details before setting out. This lets you combine a visit to the church with a specific walking plan while keeping the length of the feeder trail in mind.

Mossjön lies just outside Pelarne and covers 221 hectares. Fishing is possible there for perch, pike, vendace and whitefish. Check the latest fishing information before your visit if you plan to take part in this activity. 221 hectares is equivalent to 2.21 square kilometres, a conversion that makes the area easier to visualise.

Pelarne is located on National Road 40 between Mariannelund and Vimmerby. There are good regular bus services in Pelarne for people without a car; check the current timetable before travelling. There is an information board and parking at Pelarne Church. Check local conditions before your visit.
