Explore Mörlunda through its cultural history and natural attractions. At Mörlunda kyrka, a historic church site and a precisely located stone come together; the cultural landscape of Tveta–Mörlunda includes several villages on their original sites. Other interests lead to different themes: Moredalen is a ravine, while its wetland landscape gives Ryningen a different focus on nature. You can tailor your trip to whether history, geological landforms or nature observation is your main interest.

Cultural history: church, settlements and archaeological traces

A church probably already stood at the site of Mörlunda kyrka in 1329. The Sinnerstadsstenen, also known as Sm 152, stands at Mörlunda kyrka beside the west wall of the chancel. The combination of a probable historic church site and a precisely positioned stone offers a clear introduction to the history of the area.

The cultural heritage area of Tveta–Mörlunda is considered a cultural landscape with an 18th-century character in the valley of the Emån; Mörlunda is part of it. Several villages in this area are located on their original sites. Two other traces in the area around Mörlunda point to different periods and activities: beside Sinnerstad is a burial ground from the late Iron Age, and beside Tulunda is a slag heap from medieval iron production. The contrast is revealing: Sinnerstad points to an Iron Age burial site, while Tulunda points to iron production in the Middle Ages.

Ävlingebohuset in Mörlunda Hembygdspark represents another aspect of the area’s history. The house dates from the early 18th century and preserves period details and furniture. Unlike the archaeological traces, the focus here is on a building with preserved details and furnishings. Another local point of interest is Blockparken, located in the centre of Mörlunda.

Landscape and nature observation

At Moredalen, the focus is on the shape of the landscape. The ravine is a fissure formation that was widened and deepened by the inland ice and meltwater over many winters. This formation process makes Moredalen a geological natural attraction, distinct from observing wildlife.

Ryningen is one of the largest managed wetlands in southeastern Sweden and covers about 300 hectares. The Ryningen wetland complex along the Emån includes around 200 hectares of wet meadows. The two figures therefore refer to different areas: Ryningen as a whole and the wet meadows within the complex. Ryningen is also designated a Natura 2000 site. Many bird species can be observed there, and it is also home to numerous rare insects. If you are interested in birdwatching, you will find a different focus on nature here than in Moredalen’s geological landscape.
