Coast, culture and trails around Mörbylånga

Mörbylånga combines Öland’s west coast with a historic townscape and various opportunities to experience the landscape on foot, through culture and by the water. For planning your trip, the combination of a coastal trail, a medieval-influenced church village, art and a harbour is particularly interesting. Depending on whether you focus on a hike, historic structures or maritime impressions, the town reveals different sides.

Hiking the Mörbylångaleden

A specific option for active days is stage 2 of the Mörbylångaleden. It runs for 18 km along the coast between Skogsby and Mörbylånga. This stage therefore expressly follows the landscape by the water and connects the town with a longer stretch of coastline. In addition, stage 3 of the Mörbylångaleden is documented as measuring 13.5 km. Both details help you distinguish between sections of different lengths on the same hiking trail without combining the routes into a single one.

The Mörbylångaguiden offers another type of town walk. It is a historical audio trail through the market town of Mörbylånga. The trail focuses on the town itself and complements the Mörbylångaleden’s landscape perspective with a narrated local history.

Church and historic character of the town

Mörbylånga Church stands on the shore plain below the western land escarpment. The location of the church village dates back to the Middle Ages. The church complex is part of the World Heritage site “Agricultural Landscape of Southern Öland” and is thus embedded in a broader cultural and historical context in southern Öland. The streets also contribute to the town’s character: they reflect the character of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Those who do not want to view Mörbylånga merely as a starting point for a coastal trail will therefore find several layers of history here that can be read together spatially: the church’s location on the shore plain, the church village dating back to the Middle Ages, and the streets shaped in later periods. These elements describe the historic character of the town without reducing it to a single attraction.

Art between alvar, sea and craftsmanship

Atelje 3 Hedin is a house with studios and a gallery on the Kalmarsund. Textile objects made of wool, linen and silk are displayed there. The gallery also presents paintings inspired by Öland’s nature, the sea and the alvar. Alongside the history of the church village, this offers an artistic engagement with the island’s landscapes.

The gallery of glass artist Betina Huber is located in the centre of Mörbylånga. It displays art glass, lamps and jewellery. An appointment must be booked for a private opening. Harbour and bathing beach

The guest harbour is located on Öland’s west coast in the southern Kalmarsund. There are around 20 guest berths at the western quay. The approximate number and the location at the western quay are the harbour’s defining features. There is also a bathing beach in a northern area of Mörbylånga, at a grass-covered slope.
