Långasjö, in the Swedish municipality of Emmaboda, combines a lake in the village with cultural history: Klasatorpet is known as a filming location for the film “Utvandrarna,” while the church and Garvaregården show different periods of older architecture. When choosing a hotel or other accommodation, it helps to consider whether you are mainly planning to visit the lakeside trail, explore the film history or go on a longer hike. Check the actual location of the accommodation in relation to these destinations before booking.

Långasjö at a glance

  • Långasjön is in the centre of the village; a 1.7-kilometre circular trail passes through pastureland with oak and beech trees, as well as waterside woodland.
  • Klasatorpet is a historical croft setting that is partly preserved and partly reconstructed.
  • The village became known through filming for Jan Troell’s “Utvandrarna” in the late 1960s.
  • The present-day Långasjö Kyrka was built in 1789 on the site of an older stone church dating from the 13th century.
  • Stage UL4 of the Utvandrarleden trail runs from Långasjö to Yxnanäs.

A walk around Långasjön

The lake is in the village and forms a designated recreation area. Its 1.7-kilometre circular trail passes through pastureland with oak and beech trees; alder, willow and birch trees, among others, grow along the shore. This specific distance makes a walk by the lake easier to plan than a day hike. However, it does not tell you how long the walk takes, what each section of the trail is like or where a particular accommodation is located. Before your visit, check whether the circular trail suits your needs and the current conditions.

Film location, church and tanning history

Klasatorpet is not a completely unchanged farmstead: the historical croft setting is partly preserved and partly reconstructed. Filming for Jan Troell’s “Utvandrarna” took place there in the late 1960s. The film is based on Vilhelm Moberg’s novel series. If you are interested in the connection between the place and the literature, this offers a different reason to visit than a walk by the lake. Check separately for current opening times and visitor access.

The present-day Långasjö Kyrka was built in 1789 on the site of a stone predecessor church dating from the 13th century. An altarpiece by local artist Elisabeth Bergstrand-Poulsen is part of its furnishings. Garvaregården, a well-preserved historic farmstead, stands north of the church. Its residential building dates from the 1870s, and the farmstead is associated with pre-industrial tanning. This allows the church architecture, artistic furnishings and craft history to be considered as different aspects of the village, without assigning them the same date.

For a longer hike

If you are looking for a longer route, consider stage UL4 of the Utvandrarleden from Långasjö to Yxnanäs. After leaving the village, it passes pastures, stone walls, farmsteads and forests. At Lake Flaken, a rest at a shelter with a lake view is suggested. This describes the stage, not the 1.7-kilometre circular trail around Långasjön. Plan the length of your chosen route and the return journey separately; the route description does not indicate whether the shelter is currently accessible.

Choose accommodation to suit your travel plans

A short walk around the lake, a visit to Klasatorpet and the stage to Yxnanäs each call for different starting points and time commitments. So compare the address of the specific hotel, holiday home or apartment with your main plans. For price, amenities and availability, refer only to the current offer for your travel dates.
