Gullabo: Cultural Heritage and Routes Through Cultural Landscapes
Accommodation in Gullabo
When considering Gullabo as a travel destination, you can focus on cultural history or time spent in the landscape. In and near Gullabo, you’ll find historic houses, traces of early iron production, and options for walking and cycling tours. Would you like to focus mainly on houses and railway history, or give more space to routes and landscapes? For routes and landscapes, the Gullaboleden and the Gullaboås Nature Reserve offer points of interest.
Cultural History at Gullabo Hembygdspark
Gullabo Hembygdspark is located at the edge of Gullabo, on the road toward Vissefjärda. It includes ten well-preserved houses of various types. Their interiors reflect their original settings and are furnished in period style. Both the variety of house types and the design of the interiors are therefore part of the park’s cultural focus. For travelers interested in historic buildings, these two aspects offer different points of interest.
Railway History and Routes
The railway’s history can be traced through a specific date, a route length, and a building. The line between Torsås and Gullabo was inaugurated on September 15, 1917. The former railway line between the two places was 16 kilometers long. Gullabo Stationshus is an original station building from this railway line. The inauguration date places the history in time, the length conveys the extent of the former line, and the station building makes it tangible through a specific structure.
Gullaboleden is a scenic cycling and walking trail through well-preserved cultural landscapes. The old railway embankment was developed into a walking and cycling trail; some sections may be overgrown. The description of Gullaboleden focuses on the cultural landscape, while the embankment’s development into a trail is its defining feature. Bear in mind that some sections may be overgrown if you plan to include the railway embankment in your route.
Landscape and Industrial History
In Gullaboås Nature Reserve, near Gullabo, you’ll find sturdy trees, tall stumps, and fallen trunks. In the western part are the remains of two slag heaps from historic iron production. They measure nine and four meters in diameter, respectively, and have become overgrown with grass and moss. Different traces of the landscape are found side by side here: tree formations and remnants of iron production.
Another example of industrial history is Vattenkvarnen i Norra Gullabo. It was built in 1882 and operated until the 1920s. The mill is very well preserved and still fully functional. Its year of construction and former operating period provide a time frame; its functionality adds another aspect to the mill’s history. With a little luck, you may spot a white-throated dipper there.
In 2010, Gullabo and its surroundings were considered the then-center of Slöjdriket.
