Fågelfors: Cycling Routes and Industrial History
Accommodation in Fågelfors
Fågelfors is best explored through two themes: cycling routes of different lengths and the industrial history showcased at the Nostalgia Museum. As you plan your trip, you can compare the specific routes and decide whether you are more interested in the town’s development, art or a bathing spot.
Cycling routes of different lengths
The red cycling route runs from Fågelfors through Ljusholm, Lixhult and Nybygget and back to Fågelfors. It is 14.0 kilometres long. The blue route also returns to Fågelfors, passing through Bruket, Hytten and Lilla Klobo, and covers 6.1 kilometres. This makes the blue route 7.9 kilometres shorter than the red one. Both routes start and finish in Fågelfors—a clear comparison if you want to choose your cycling route based on length first.
The blue cycling route passes through Fågelfors. The town developed around Bruket as a vibrant centre between lakes, the Nötån River and the surrounding cultural landscape. Alongside the route length, the town’s history offers another perspective on Fågelfors: it connects the town’s development with named landscape features and Bruket. An optional detour to Hembygdsgården is also available on the blue route.
A black cycling route passes the meadow at Horvan. The routes in Fågelfors and the surrounding area also feature different surfaces: some sections run along country roads and forest tracks, while others are exclusively trails. A mountain bike may be suitable for these sections; depending on the route, you may need to push your bike. As route conditions can change, check them before setting out.
Industrial History and Art
Nostalgia in Fågelfors is a museum dedicated to working and industrial history. The exhibition “Från Järn till Trä” covers 280 years of industrial history and describes the transition from 18th-century ironworking to a modern timber industry. The shift from iron to wood gives the subject a clear narrative: the focus is on different industrial periods and the transformation of Fogelfors Bruk. The exhibition therefore looks beyond a single material to a broader transformation of working life.
Nostalgia also has an exhibition about the revue king Ernst Rolf, whose roots are in Fågelfors. This adds a figure with local ties to the theme of industrial history. Another work of art can be found in Fågelfors församlingskyrka: its most significant artwork is a large carpet on the choir floor, designed and woven by Kalmar artist Ann-Mari Holke. Its size, specific location in the church and named artist make it a distinct point of interest alongside the exhibition themes.
