Vilce brings together a manor house of national significance and a landscape shaped by rivers. The history of the area also includes an archaeological hillfort and an exhibition on the history of the parish. Nature trails and a disc golf course add to the cultural attractions. This allows you to choose different focuses for your stay: architectural history, landscape and outdoor activities each offer something distinctive.

Manor House and Local History

The manor house at Vilces muiža is an architectural monument of national significance and part of the Vilces muižas apbūve architectural monument (protection number 5280). It was built in the third quarter of the 18th century. The stone Baroque portal bears the coat of arms of the Medem and Keyserling family alliance. The building date, monument status and portal each highlight a different aspect: the house’s history is evident both in its protected status and in a specific architectural detail.

An exhibition on the history of the parish is located at Vilces muiža. Work to uncover historic wall and ceiling paintings in Room 14 of the manor house has been underway since 2019. These bring two aspects together: the history of the parish and the historic interior decoration of the manor house.

Rivers, Landscape and Hillfort

In Vilces dabas parks, the Vilce and Rukūze rivers meet as they flow through ravines. The deeply cut river valleys contrast with the region’s flat, agricultural landscape. The sandstone outcrops along the riverbanks are also part of the area’s natural character: near Zaķu pļava, Devonian outcrops known as Nāriņu klints lie along the banks of the Vilce and Rukūze.

The 12-metre-high Vilces pilskalns is a hillfort inhabited by the Semigallians during the Middle and Late Iron Age. It lies at the confluence of the Vilce and Rukūze rivers. From its summit, you can look out over the valleys and the sandstone outcrops of the Rukūze. Here, the hill’s archaeological history meets expansive views of the river landscape.

Walks and Routes

The Barona taka, established as part of Natura 2000, is suitable for informative walks, hiking, running, nature observation and outdoor recreation. A walking trail also leads from Vilces muiža to Vilces pilskalns. If you choose trails by their character, you’ll find a wide range of the activities mentioned, as well as a walk with a clearly stated destination.

Another option is the moderately difficult riverside route along the Vilce between Vilces ūdensdzirnavas and the Swedish Monument. It is approximately eight kilometres long. By comparison, the route to the hillfort is described in terms of its destination and the view, while the riverside route is characterised by its approximate length and difficulty level. These details can help you weigh up the different route features when planning your own visit.

Disc Golf and Other Viewpoints

A disc golf course with 12 baskets extends across the landscape park at Vilces muiža, where tournaments can also be held. Discs for the course can be borrowed from the Vilce Tourism Information Point by prior arrangement. The information point is located at Vilces muiža. For planning purposes, it is important to distinguish between the course and the disc hire: the baskets are in the landscape park, while discs can be borrowed from the information point by prior arrangement.

There is also a small viewing platform called Mīlestības kalniņš in Vilce Nature Park. It complements the view from the summit of Vilces pilskalns with another named viewpoint. Together with the river valleys and sandstone outcrops, it offers another perspective on the natural features that define Vilce.
