Platone can be explored through its architectural history, artists’ biographies, and hands-on nature experiences. In Platones pagasts, different themes sit side by side: a Lutheran church, a Neoclassical manor house, the family home “Zīlēni,” and activities centered on natural cosmetics and sea buckthorn. This mix offers different ways to plan a trip: you can explore architecture and history, as well as take part in a hands-on activity or enjoy a culinary experience.

Church, Manor House, and Artists’ History

The Lutheran Church of Lielvircava in Platones pagasts is the oldest brick church in Jelgavas novads. Baron Johans fon Klopmans of the Klopman family had it built in 1595. Today, it is a cultural monument of national importance and bears the number 5239.

Lielvircava Manor House was also built in Platones pagasts, between 1803 and 1808, in the Neoclassical style. The church and manor house therefore represent different periods of construction: the church was built in 1595, and the manor house more than two centuries later. Visitors interested in architecture can consider them as distinct historical highlights, rather than combining them into a single architectural history.

The painter Ģederts Eliass’s family home, “Zīlēni,” offers another cultural perspective. It tells the story of the artist brothers Kristaps and Ģederts. So, alongside architectural history, the focus here is on an artist’s biography and the story of two brothers—a different way to explore the culture of Platones pagasts than through its churches and manor houses.

Hands-On Activities and Natural Cosmetics

At Dārziņi-2, visitors can take part in a short introduction to making natural cosmetics. They choose plants themselves and use them to make a mask for the face, feet, or hands. The activity combines an introduction with hands-on participation; the plants chosen determine what goes into the mask they make.

A visit to Dārziņi-2 in Platones pagasts also includes a tour of the business, an introduction to its products, and a master class. It lasts 1 to 1.5 hours. This duration gives visitors a guide for planning their day around this particular visit, without conflating it with the other activities.

Sea Buckthorn by the Platone River

The ZELT sea buckthorn garden is located in Platones pagasts, Jelgavas novads, on the banks of the Platone River. A guided tour covers sea buckthorn cultivation and includes product tastings. The culinary master class has a different focus: participants prepare, serve, and taste dishes made with sea buckthorn. Advance booking is required for both the tour and the master class. When choosing between the two, visitors can consider whether they are more interested in cultivation and tasting, or in preparing dishes.
