Island of Møn between white cliffs and medieval history

The seven-kilometre-long coastline of Møns Klint combines white cliffs with a striking difference in elevation: the rock faces rise up to 128 metres above the sea. The island's directly assigned localities include Hårbølle, Råbylille, Røddinge, Stege, Sømarke and Vollerup.

Nature and landscape

Møn and Nyord have been designated by the International Dark-Sky Association as the Nordic region's first Dark Sky Park and first Dark Sky Community. Another landscape area is Knudshoved Odde: the 15-kilometre-long headland lies on the Smålandsfarvandet and includes beach ridges, dunes, open grassland, forests and lakes. Rare animal and plant species occur there.

At the Avnø Nature Centre, visitors observe seals as well as waterbirds and migratory birds from a former control tower; paths lead to suitable observation sites. Oringepynten is publicly accessible and can be walked around entirely. Old trees, water and green spaces characterise the area, which also offers views of Vordingborg Nordhavn and the Farø Bridges.

The Naturrum Præstø Fjord enables visitors to observe birds and plants, explore the shallow water and view exhibitions about life on the fjord, stories and nature films. An overnight stay for one night is also possible there. At the Fjordposten Præstø Strand there is an accessible toilet and a paved path suitable for wheelchairs. The Fjordposten Roneklint Fyr is an information space with exhibitions about birds and the cultural history of the lighthouse; it also has a boat shelter for overnight stays.

Paths and water

The Møn Biosphere's summer calendar brings together excursions into the landscape from July to October, activities involving wild gardens, boat trips in shallow coastal areas and tastings focused on sustainable coexistence between people and nature. Along the Camønoen hiking trail stand 250 apple trees with old local varieties such as Spejlsby Pigeon and Borre Kærneæble.

Kirkeskoven is a five-minute walk from Vordingborg's main street and is used for walking and running. Dronning Alexandrines Bro, also called Mønbroen or Ulvsundbroen, connects Kalvehave and Koster across the Ulvsund between Zealand and Møn.

Vordingborg Nordhavn is a marina with views of the Gåsetårnet and is just a short walk from Vordingborg's historic town centre. On the coast of Vordingborg there are bathing beaches as well as opportunities for kayaking, stand-up paddling, surfing and underwater experiences.

GeoCenter Møns Klint offers guided expeditions to search for fossils on the beach below the cliffs, where fossils from 70 million years ago can be found. The programme also includes more than 20 indoor and outdoor experiences, including guided tours, a climbing and ropes course, a 3D cinema and mountain bike tours. The mountain bike rides follow the trails of Klinteskoven; bicycles are lent by GeoCenter, and the route and pace are adapted to the respective group, with a minimum age of 12.

Culture and history

Danmarks Borgcenter in Vordingborg combines a museum, the Vordingborg castle ruins and the Gåsetårnet into a medieval experience. As an interactive experience centre for the whole family, it enables visitors to explore medieval castles, power and history independently. The Gåsetårnet is 36 metres high and the only surviving tower of the former castle of Vordingborg. The castle ruins also include the historic ring wall and the ruins of St Andrew's Church; the site is suitable for walks, historical exploration and a picnic.

The Historical-Botanical Garden in Vordingborg has preserved old Almue plants since 1921, which were traditionally used for culture, beauty and healing. Fanefjord Church is known for its exceptional lime paintings and its beautiful medieval furnishings.

The Møn Museum has been located in Empiregården, an old merchant's house in Stege, since 1958. Stege is one of Denmark's oldest market towns and bears both medieval and more recent historical influences. Psykiatrisk Museum Oringe presents the history of psychiatry through authentic objects and exhibitions in former hospital buildings.

Liselund Romantiske Have is considered Denmark's best-preserved romantic garden complex and tells the story of its founder Antoine de la Calmette and his wife Lisa. 44Møen is a small art village with facilities for sound art, educational programmes and working artists.

Local specialities

Møn and Nyord offer local specialities such as confectionery, gin with native herbs, cheese and freshly ground mustard.
