Toila Parish: Beach, Cliffs and Cultural Heritage on the Gulf of Finland

Toila Parish combines coast and landscape with culture and recreation. Toila Beach lies at the mouth of the Pühajõgi River on the Gulf of Finland. Low embankments of beach stones beside a narrow strip of sand shape the shore; two beach volleyball courts add a sporting option. The geographical point of Türsamäe Neem is located in the vicinity of Toila Parish. The Ontika Cliffs rise up to 55 m above sea level and give the coastal landscape a pronounced relief. At the beach, low stone embankments and the narrow strip of sand define the scenery, while the Ontika Cliffs, reaching heights of up to 55 m, create a distinctly different coastal character.

Hiking Trails Between Forest, Cliffs and Sea

Several clearly described trails are available for active days. The Saka Klindimõisa hiking trail is 2 km long and runs along the cliff edge and beside the sea. The 1.3 km hiking trail leads from Valaste Waterfall through the cliff forest to the sea. The Metsa hiking trail reaches Estonia’s northern coast near Toila. The different lengths and routes help you assess the desired mix of coast, forest and hiking. The trail lengths provide a simple guide for planning walks; at the same time, the longer route follows the cliff edge and shore, while the shorter one leads from the waterfall through the forest to the sea.

Oru Park as a Natural and Cultural Site

Oru Park lies in the valley of the Pühajõgi River. In the park, you can walk along well-marked and well-maintained paths; it is also home to Hõbeallika Cave (Silver Spring). The Estonian and English names of the cave make it easier to find your way when different references to the site are used. In Oru Park, walks along marked paths and Hõbeallika Cave stand alongside each other as distinct elements of the same natural and cultural site.

History Made Visible and Experiential

Pühajõe Church was rebuilt after a fire in 1894. During the “VR Toila 1938” VR experience, visitors can rent a VR headset and see Oru Manor brought back to life. The experience conveys stories about the manor’s construction and renovation, as well as insights into the life of Estonian President Konstantin Päts at Oru. It thus combines the reconstruction of a historic site with architectural history and a political biography. The Estonian Mining Museum offers a different focus: the beneficiation plant illustrates the journey of oil shale and the production of energy, while the underground museum provides a sensory experience of everyday work underground.

Relaxation and Coastal Cuisine

For relaxation, the Toila Baths offer steam, infrared, aroma, wood-fired and salt saunas. Facilities include heated benches and whirlpools. Toila Mereresto serves fresh dishes made with local ingredients, shaped by Estonian coastal culinary traditions and modern influences.
