Kauksi on Lake Peipus – Beach and Nature

Kauksi combines the shores of Lake Peipus with dunes, pine forest and varied trails. A good starting point for orientation is the Alutaguse National Park Visitor Centre: from there, a 300-metre-long path leads through a coastal pine forest to Lake Peipus, a sandy beach and the mainland dunes. At 300 metres, this access route is considerably shorter than the 4.4 kilometres of the Luite matkarada in one direction and the 3.6 kilometres of the Kauksi-oja nature trail.

Hiking between dunes, forest and a river mouth

The Luite matkarada starts at the Alutaguse National Park Visitor Centre and follows the shore of Lake Peipus to the mouth of the Rannapungerja River. The hiking trail is 4.4 kilometres long in one direction, making 8.8 kilometres for the return journey. Along the way, it passes through shifting dunes with dune oaks of different ages and shapes and follows the Rannapungerja River. The trail also runs through the Kauksi campsite and reaches the river mouth at its end. The route therefore connects the lakeshore section, the dune landscape and the riverbank in one continuous trail.

A shorter option with a different character is the Kauksi-oja nature trail. It is 3.6 kilometres long and follows the banks of a stream through varied woodland; the stream flows into Lake Peipus. The nature trail introduces the pine forest and its communities on the dunes of the Lake Peipus coast. If you arrive by bus, you can reach the trail via the Kauksi stop; after 600 metres, it begins on the grounds of the visitor centre. The stop is not directly at the nature trail.

The two trails have different focuses: the Luite matkarada connects the coast, shifting dunes and river mouth, while the Kauksi-oja nature trail combines woodland, stream banks and the communities of the dunes.

Beach area and promenade

A promenade approximately one kilometre long runs along Lake Peipus over the Kauksi dunes and beneath the pines. Seating areas and viewing platforms form part of its route. The seating areas and viewing platforms are located along this approximately one-kilometre-long section. The Kauksi beach area also has designated barbecue and camping sites at the Kauksi campsite.

The beach promenade has children's playgrounds, two volleyball courts, a streetball court and an outdoor fitness area with 16 pieces of equipment. Kauksi Beach Centre opened in 2021 and offers various bicycles for hire, including standard bicycles, fatbikes and bicycles with baskets or child seats.

Visitor centre, exhibitions and events

The Alutaguse National Park Visitor Centre in Kauksi küla offers educational programmes. It also houses the permanent exhibitions “Alutaguse rahvuspargi aarded” and “Ida-Virumaa maastikud”. They complement the trails and landscapes with an insight into the area's natural and regional themes.

A dedicated cultural event is Mägede Hääl, a music festival held on Kauksi beach. For orientation on a longer route, the Penijõe-Aegviidu-Kauksi hiking trail is also marked with white-yellow-white markings and trail signs.
