Gotlands Tofta
Gotlands Tofta combines beach landscapes, easy hiking trails and historic sites to create a diverse destination on Gotland. If you choose your accommodation based on the experiences available in the surrounding area, you will find both paths through coastal and dune landscapes as well as maritime and cultural-historical attractions. Days at the beach, walks and visits to historic sites can all be combined here. Depending on your interests, you can move between the beach, natural woodland, dunes and cultural sites.
Hiking between the beach and natural woodland
The Tofta Strand-GnisvÀrdleden is an easy 5 km circular hiking trail. There are also two marked circular loops: the yellow-and-white loop is approximately 6 km long, and the green-and-white loop is approximately 9 km long. At 5 km, the Tofta Strand-GnisvÀrdleden is shorter than the two longer loops. The yellow-and-white and green-and-white markings distinguish the two variants. Both circular loops start at the large car park at Tofta bathing area.
Tofta Strand stretches north from the fishing village of GnisvÀrd to the SnÄltorp nature reserve in the south. Tofta SmÄgÄrde is located in the northern part of Tofta Strand. The beach and sand dunes do not have the same southern endpoint: the beach reaches as far as the SnÄltorp nature reserve, while the dunes extend to Tofta södra.
SmÄgÄrde naturskog lies in this landscape area, a small natural woodland area near Tofta beach. Its areas include shifting sand dunes that extend from the fishing village of GnisvÀrd to Tofta södra. A nature trail through SmÄgÄrde naturskog begins opposite the entrance to Tofta Strandpensionat. The trail therefore provides a separate access route to this woodland and dune area, while the circular loops start at the large car park at Tofta bathing area.
Beach and coastal character
Tofta SmÄgÄrde is an EU bathing water with a relatively gently sloping beach. Tofta Strand itself is a sandy beach with a strip of beach approximately 20 m wide. The gentle slope of the beach and the width of the sand strip describe two different characteristics of the bathing area. Those who value varied landscape impressions when choosing their accommodation can combine a sandy beach with a coastal section characterised by dunes, natural woodland and the transition to the SnÄltorp nature reserve.
Culture in Tofta
Tofta kyrka is a medieval stone church. The oldest parts of its tower date from the early 13th century.
Tofta HembygdsgÄrd is a historic site operated and maintained by the Tofta Hembygdsförening. Visitors can take part in the annual Fagning and flea markets there; activities also take place throughout the year.
Accessibility and choosing accommodation
Tofta has relatively good public transport connections. A cycle path runs along Road 140 between Visby and Klintehamn, improving accessibility for visitors. Mobility in the area therefore includes both public transport and a cycling connection along this road.
