Torsåker combines church art, mining history and trails through a varied landscape.

Church, Farms and Plant Diversity

The present three-aisled Torsåker Church was built between 1754 and 1758. It stands on the site of an earlier building from the 12th century. The church contains an altarpiece and a pulpit made by Mårten Jönsson. For visitors interested in culture, the church therefore offers a tangible connection to the local history of architecture and furnishings. The historic identity of the church can also be incorporated into travel plans without setting a specific duration for the visit.

Gammelgården is a miner’s farmstead dating from the early 19th century. The building now known as Gammelgården was moved in the 1920s from Hagas farm in the village of Stenshyttan to Fors by. Every year, the Torsåker local heritage association invites people to Gammelgården for a traditional Midsummer celebration and offers tours in summer. Those wishing to coordinate their visit with a seasonal date will find a historical focus here with a clear connection to the time of year.

The Pelargon Museum & Garden in Torsåker offers another cultural dimension. More than 200 varieties of pelargoniums are displayed there. The museum also includes two greenhouses covering 160 and 130 square metres respectively, as well as a café. This makes it possible to combine a museum visit with an appreciation of plant diversity and time spent at the café.

Mining History and Underground Trails

Stollgången is a 265-metre-long mine adit leading directly into Storberget. From Stollgången, a signposted nature trail of approximately two kilometres leads to Tjärnäs hytta. There is a walking area around “Stollen”, the colloquial name for the mine adit. Guided tours to underground mine chambers are also offered through Stollgången. Those interested in the history of iron processing can choose between a walk, the nature trail and a guided underground tour.

Geology is also part of the character of the surrounding area. At Valls limestone quarry, the bedrock in Torsåker contains both iron ore and limestone. The limestone bands are generally long, narrow and winding; they were formed by complex folding in the rock. Further afield lies Skommarhyttan, a former ironworks area through which the Gästrikeleden trail passes. In the municipality of Hofors, the Gästrikeleden also passes historic traces of iron processing in Bergslagen.

Active Days Around Torsåker

There is a disc golf course in the centre of Torsåker. A nine-hole round can be played there free of charge. Discs can be borrowed from the parish office by calling 0290-400 02. Those looking for a sporting activity that is easy to plan can schedule this round independently of a museum or history programme.

The Torsåker exercise trails begin above Torsåker IP on Kägelvägen. The 5-kilometre route leads up Lindforsberget. Kårsberget offers another experience of the landscape: it is a 66-hectare natural forest area south of Torsåker. A short hiking trail across the rocky terrain leads to a viewpoint. Malmjärn, a shallow bathing spot, is also located four kilometres southeast of Torsåker.

Season and Travel Planning

The season changes the possible focuses. In summer, visitors can choose from tours of Gammelgården, the Pelargon Museum, Malmjӓrn bathing spot and the trails around Kårsberget. When there is sufficient snow, under the direction of Torsåkers IF, a connection from the 5-kilometre loop of the Torsåker ski trail to Pålsboängarna is prepared. This condition should be explicitly taken into account when planning; the winter option depends on the snow conditions.

This makes it possible to base the search for a hotel in Torsåker on a clear travel theme: church art and historic buildings, mining and geology, plant diversity or outdoor activities. The individual places and activities offer different points of emphasis without requiring a fixed programme.
