Korskrogen lies five kilometres west of Färila and 21 kilometres west of Ljusdal. On the Ljusnan, an unregulated stretch of river, hiking trails and reminders of historic forestry come together. When choosing a hotel, holiday home or holiday apartment, it is therefore important to consider whether you mainly want to explore the river or visit the cultural and historical sites in Lassekrog. A place name alone does not tell you how close an accommodation option is to the relevant trailhead.

The Ljusnan near Korskrogen

The Mellanljusnan nature reserve covers a 24-kilometre unregulated stretch of the Ljusnan between Laforsen and Korskrogen, as well as parts of the surrounding forest. The Mellanljusnan Korskrogen–Edeforsen Natura 2000 site also runs along the river, but extends from Korskrogen to Edeforsen. The two protected-area descriptions have different endpoints and should not be understood as one single 24-kilometre trail. If you want to explore a particular section, choose your access point based on the latest information about the area.

Around Korskrogen, the Ljusnanleden runs along the river’s northeastern side. Near Korskrogen, a ridge 25 to 30 metres high, with steep sides, also follows the eastern slope of the valley. The landscape is therefore more than a uniform riverbank: river, forest and distinctive valley terrain come together. The ridge’s height does not indicate a gradient for the entire hiking trail or whether it is suitable for everyone. Check the exact route before choosing accommodation based on its presumed proximity to the trail.

The Ljusnan corridor used for fishing between Laforsen and Ljusdal covers 40 kilometres of flowing water and quieter stretches; Korskrogen lies within this larger area. These 40 kilometres describe the fishing corridor, not the nature reserve and not the length of a single day hike. For a fishing trip, check the water section, local conditions and the actual location of the accommodation separately. The river description does not confirm that a hotel has particular facilities or that you will catch fish.

Lassekrog and the history of forestry

The Lassekrog inn was built in 1671 and served for centuries as a place where carters, their horses and other travellers could stay overnight. It was relocated and restored in the 1960s because of roadworks, and reopened in August 1963. This history makes the building a tangible site connected to the area’s transport history. It does not, however, provide information about current rooms, food service or visiting hours.

Albert Viksten’s Kojby is also located in Lassekrog near Korskrogen. Its reconstructed buildings relate to charcoal production, forestry and log driving. The site was completed in September 1966; Viksten conceived it as a cultural and historical monument to former living conditions in the forests. A visit therefore answers a different question from a walk by the river: how did people live and work when their activities were connected to the forest and water? The word “reconstructed” matters, because the buildings should not be presented as completely unchanged originals.

Planning routes and accommodation

If you want to continue to the Stora Korpimäki nature reserve, turn off road 84 onto road 310 at Korskrogen. This is route guidance to another protected area, not a claim that it is located in the village. For help choosing trails, Ljusdal Municipality’s Naturkartan provides information about protected areas, hiking and cycling trails, accessibility and contacts for the responsible managers. It can help you find an access point that actually suits your needs, rather than assuming from an overview that all trails are equally accessible.

For an individual hotel or holiday property, compare the address, directions and services offered with the river, Lassekrog or your chosen hiking section. The overview of Ljusdal provides the regional context. Prices and availability are only shown for specific listings; a historic tradition of overnight stays and present-day bookability are two different things.
