Kolforsen: Paddling, Nature and Local History
Accommodation in Kolforsen
Kolforsen is best explored through its water, nature and local history. The Testeboån runs through the village; there are also fishing spots, a short rapid, and a rest and launch area. This gives you specific topics to consider when planning your trip: paddling and fishing on the river, Stormyran’s unusual hydrotopography, and traces of local history. The key question is whether you want to focus your stay more on activities on the water or on the landscape and history of the village.
Water, Terrain and Nature
Near Kolforsen, Stormyran has an unusual hydrotopography. The distinctive relationship between water and terrain gives the landscape its own character and complements the river as a nature attraction. There are also fishing spots along the Testeboån in Kolforsen, where you can fish for pike, perch and whitefish. Catches and seasonal conditions may vary; check current local conditions before fishing.
Paddling and Launching on the Water
The Kolforsen rapid is short and easy to paddle; its characteristics may change with the water level. Further afield, a well-developed canoe route runs along the Testeboån between Ockelbo and Smörnäs. When choosing, it helps to distinguish between the rapid’s short paddling section and the route in the wider area: one is a specific stretch of rapids, while the other is a canoe route between two places. This can help you decide whether a single stretch or a route as a broader framework matters more to you.
At the rest and launch area, the riverbed is sandy at normal water levels. Under the same water-level conditions, the area is 50 metres from the loading point and car park. If you’re planning to set off on the water, both the ground surface and the distance to these points are useful details. Access at the site may change, so check current local conditions before setting off.
Traces of Local History
The historical village walk in Kolforsen was part of the 2025 project, which included permanently installed information boards. They were intended to make it possible to take the walk even after the event. The project therefore combined an event with a walk designed to continue beyond it.
Kolforsen station is another trace of local history: the Swedish National Heritage Board once considered it worthy of preservation, but the station building no longer exists. A shieling associated with life at the summer pasture in Kolforsen in 1901 survives in converted form. The two details point to different themes: the station’s former preservation status and shieling life in 1901.
