Hamrånge between Coast, Cultural Landscape and History

Hamrånge is located in Hamrångebygden on the Jungfrukusten coast between Gävle and Söderhamn. When choosing your Baltic Sea destination, the landscape combines several different impressions: open cultural landscapes meet forests, lakes and an archipelago landscape. This allows you to tailor your stay more towards nature, the coast, outdoor activities or culture, without having to view these areas separately from one another.

Cultural Monuments and Historic Places

A prominent reference point in the region’s history is Hamrånge Church. It was built between 1847 and 1851 using stones from the medieval church. The Kastale also points to a much earlier era: it was built in the 12th century as a defensive structure. The church and the Kastale thus represent two clearly separated historical periods: the church was built in the 19th century, while the Kastale dates back to the 12th century.

Axmar bruk offers a special combination of industrial history, landscape and garden art. The site has been Gävleborg’s only cultural reserve since 2011. The English Park at Axmar bruk dates from the 1860s. Walking paths lead through the English-inspired park, the forest and along the marina. This means that the site can be explored not only through individual historic buildings, but also through its designed landscape and maritime character.

Hiking Trails with Different Focal Points

For a shorter hike, Stora bruksrundan is a good option. At 4 km, it runs around the Axmar bruk Cultural Reserve and along the Stig till vrak trail. This creates a clear distinction when choosing a route: Kristinastigen is slightly longer at approximately 5 km, while Kyrkstigen is considerably longer at 9.3 km. At the same time, the trails pass through different landscapes, from the cultural reserve via farmland to the forest.

Kristinastigen is a marked section of Helgonleden, approximately 5 km long. It passes through agricultural and forest landscapes and by several archaeological remains. Those looking for a longer forest trail will find a 9.3 km route in Kyrkstigen. The residents of Axmar used this path in the past on their way to church; its historical function is therefore explicitly part of the route description.

Archipelago Landscape and Paddling Routes

The coastal landscape near Axmar bruk can also be viewed from the water. There are three paddling routes through an almost untouched archipelago landscape: Inomskärsturen, Kusö Kalvturen and Kusön övernattningstur.

Getting There and Regional Orientation

Hamrångebygden can be reached via the E4 exits at Hagsta or Axmartavlan. In addition, bus route 25 connects Gävle with Hamrångefjärden, Norrsundet and Bergby.
