Alfta: Hälsingland Farmhouses, Museums and Cycling Routes
Accommodation in Alfta
Alfta can be explored primarily through two interests: cultural history and outdoor activities. When considering the area for your travel plans, you can distinguish between farmhouses and museums on the one hand, and mountain biking and hiking routes on the other. This makes it clear from the outset which themes might shape your stay, even as you choose your destination.
Hälsingland Farmhouses, Museums and Local History
Hälsingegård Ol-Anders is a Hälsingland farmhouse with Empire-style outbuildings and original interior paintings preserved from 1848. At the farmhouse, the Emigrant Museum tells the story of the arduous journey taken by the Erikjansarna from Alfta to Bishop Hill. The Industrial History Museum focuses on another chapter: it traces ÖSA’s development from a village smithy into a world-leading forestry machinery company. Together, the two museums showcase different subjects—emigration and industrial history.
Hälsingegård Ol-Anders is also home to Barnens Världsarv, a creative workshop for children. Hälgegården is also located there in Alfta. The museum presents the life of Lars Mortimer as a cartoonist and creator of Hälge, Bobo and Gnuttarna. Another perspective on these characters can be found at the Bobo and Gnuttarna Museum in Alfta’s old railway station: it displays characters, films and information about Bobo and Gnuttarna. If you are interested in the characters, you can consider how they are represented in the museum alongside an overview of Mortimer’s life and work.
Alfta’s local history also includes the preserved historic buildings of Alfta kyrkby och samhälle around the church and along Långgatan. In Långhed near Alfta, Jon-Lars is one of the seven farmhouses included in the Hälsingland Farmhouses World Heritage site. Another cultural attraction nearby is Hälsingegård Löka in Gundbo. It has a local history museum, a shop selling local handicrafts and a café. Visits are seasonal and available by request; this access arrangement may change.
Routes and Outdoor Activities
The routes also vary in length and character. Stora Hälsingegårdars Väg is a 28 km tourist route that starts at Hälsingegård Ol-Anders in Alfta. Vikebergsleden in Alfta offers 15 and 20 km routes for mountain biking and hiking. This means there is a choice of both a tourist route and trails specifically for these two activities.
Vikebergsleden also includes a marked MTB loop of approximately 4.5 km at the motocross track in Viken. The approximate length is an estimate. If you are comparing mountain biking routes, you will find two options: the 15 and 20 km routes and the shorter marked loop. For planning purposes, it is also worth noting that the 28 km figure refers to the tourist route, while Vikebergsleden is specifically described as suitable for mountain biking and hiking.
For trips with a dog, a specific bathing area is designated at Kvarnsveden in Alfta: dogs can swim between the pedestrian bridge towards Forsparken and the start of the main bathing area. The description marks out the area using two landmarks—helpful if you are considering including this bathing spot in your plans.
