Radziņciems between nature trails and cultural sites

Radziņciems is a starting point for nature and cultural experiences around the Milzukalns Nature Reserve. The village is one of the settlements closest to this protected area. This brings together a landscape where protected nature, marked trails, historical traces, and distinctive natural features converge within a compact regional area.

Natural Areas and Trails around Radziņciems

The Milzukalns Nature Reserve was established in 1977 to protect a kame hill, steep slopes, and spruce and mixed forests. The area also has significant landscape value. Nearby, Ūdru-Milzukalns is designated as a state-protected cultural monument and hillfort. Milzukalns was used as a settlement site in ancient times, giving the natural area a historical dimension as well.

Lake Valguma lies 3 km east of Radziņciems. It is 3 km long, 0.2 km wide, and up to 30 m deep. There are three cycling routes in the surrounding area, measuring 16 km, 17 km, and 22 km. Several trails are available for shorter or themed outings: the “Valguma pasaulē” nature art trail runs for 1.5 km past 80 photographs. The “Valguma pasaule” orienteering trail is 4 km long and runs through Ķemeri National Park near the Valguma nature art trail. There is also a 3.5 km nature discovery and Nordic walking trail.

The nature art trail combines observing nature with specific landscape features. Protected habitats and rock outcrops along the Slocene River can be seen there. Among other species, kingfishers, grey herons, and black storks can be observed. In addition, the barefoot trail at “Valguma pasaule” is 3 km long. It includes a foot bath in a flower bath followed by herbal tea. In the surrounding area, the “Valguma pasaule” leisure complex rents out plastic and wooden boats as well as water bicycles, and offers fishing equipment.

Culture and Distinctive Features of the Area

There are also notable traces of the landscape away from the trails. Mārtiņa (Radziņciema) Cemetery is designated as an archaeological object within the cultural landscape. Two Scots pines in Radziņciems are also listed in the tree database with recorded trunk circumferences: “Radziņciema 2. priede” measures 2.98 m, while another Scots pine measures 2.55 m.

Nearby, Šlokenbeka Manor was first mentioned in written records in 1484. Today, guided tours are offered there covering the manor’s history, economic activities, and social life. Šlokenbeka Manor is also home to the Latvian Road Museum. When choosing your accommodation, Radziņciems can therefore be combined both with nature-focused days at Lake Valguma and with cultural and historical destinations, without limiting yourself to just one type of trip.
