Cycling and forests nearby
The Helligpeder cycling route passes through Muleby. The full route runs from Rønne through open woodland, past forest lakes and hidden industrial relics, and through the small villages of Sorthat and Muleby. The municipal cycle path between Rønne and Hasle offers a different direct connection to the area: it passes through Blykobbe Plantation nearby. This gives you two distinct options for cycling days: a route through Muleby and a connection through the plantation.
Kilen is a recreational forest close to town, used mainly as a local recreation area for Muleby. Kilen is home to the Klavsemølle-dæmningen, a road or transport embankment built and used to transport materials to and from the decommissioned brickworks. The area is designated a national industrial heritage site. Both the forest and the industrial past are part of the character of the surrounding area.
In Blykobbe Plantation, a yellow-marked hiking trail starts at the nature access point on Rosmannevej. It passes through the quieter parts of the plantation and by Tillehøjene, Bavnehøj, Blykobbe Å, Prinsens Kilde and the earthworks in the coastal dunes. Tables and benches are available at busy spots and selected viewpoints. Trail conditions can change, so check them before setting out on a hike.
Industrial history, fishing and things to do
Pyritsøen is located near Sorthat-Muleby. Like the nearby lakes Smaragdsø and Rubinsø, it was formed in former clay pits. The clay was used by Hasle Klinke- og Chamottestensfabrik to produce clinker bricks and refractory bricks; extraction ended in the late 1980s. This history gives the landscape its own industrial character.
The coast between Pyritsøen and Levka offers good fishing, including for sea trout. Pike and perch live in Pyritsøen itself, and no fishing licence is required to fish in the lake. Check the current fishing regulations before your visit. For children, the Natureventyr adventure near Sorthat-Muleby tells a dinosaur story and the mystery of the coal workers’ missing diamonds.
