Near Knudsker, the erratic boulder Bleghald and the final sections of the “Klippeøen rundt” gravel route offer two different starting points for days spent in nature or cycling. A visit to the boulder can be planned using a specifically described access route and walking path. The gravel route, by contrast, passes through several types of landscape. Bleghald and nearby paths
The erratic boulder Bleghald is located in Knudsker Plantage. Large parts of the stone are covered in green moss. If you want to get as close as possible to Bleghald by car, the Blemmelyngvejen gets you closest to the boulder. There is space for exactly one car opposite the Blemmelyng property. From there, a 700-metre walking path leads north along forest trails. When planning, therefore, take into account both the limited parking and the walk that follows.
Access is different on nearby Plantagevej. Signs at both ends prohibit entry to motor vehicles, heavy mopeds, tractors, and work machinery; cycling and walking are permitted. Check the signs on site before using the path. This information applies to Plantagevej, while access to the boulder is described via Blemmelyngvejen.
Gravel route through plantations and around Arnager
The final sections of the “Klippeøen rundt” gravel cycling route pass through Knudsker Plantage and Onsbæk Plantage, as well as the area around Arnager and the airport. This gives the route a different perspective on the surrounding area from a single visit to Bleghald. Include the specific sections in your planning; route conditions can change, so it is worth checking the current route before setting off.
Bornholm: landscapes, culture, and places to visit
For a broader regional perspective, Bornholm offers its own nature and culture. Ekkodalen in Almindingen is Bornholm’s largest rift valley. From the cliffs above Opal Lake, you can see the surrounding area, the Baltic Sea, and the castle ruins of Hammershus. The visitor centre at Hammershus also offers panoramic views of Hammershus. These different landscapes and viewpoints complement the nature experiences around Knudsker, but are not the same as the access route to Bleghald or the gravel route.
Museums also offer a range of different themes. At the NaturBornholm experience centre, you can see dinosaurs, live crocodiles, an aquarium, and a bison exhibition. Exhibitions can change, so check in advance what will be on display during your visit. Bornholms Middelaldercenter is a 15-hectare open-air museum that brings 14th-century Bornholm to life in an engaging and interactive way. At Østerlars Round Church, access is subject to a condition: if there is no service taking place, visitors can enter for a fee and climb up to the roof beams. The history of smoking fish is part of the region’s food culture. Bornholm’s first smokehouse opened in Gudhjem in 1866, where herring has been smoked ever since. Hasle Smokehouse is the last smokehouse on Bornholm where fish is smoked traditionally using open chimneys and alder wood. The two places thus represent different aspects of the smoking tradition: its history in Gudhjem and the traditional smoking method in Hasle.
Getting to Bornholm
Bornholm can be reached by ferry, plane, bus, or train. The ferry crossing from Ystad in Sweden to Bornholm takes one hour and 20 minutes.
