Facilities and community life in Årsballe

Visitors can eat food they have brought with them in Årsballe, refill a water bottle at the outdoor kitchen area, charge a mobile phone and use a toilet. The community hall in Årsballe has been upgraded with new seating areas, a kitchenette and an accessible toilet. Communal meals were also held in Årsballe every month. If you plan to use these facilities, check their current status in advance.

Two trails of different lengths

The 1.5 km trail loops around Årsballe Mose. The approximately 9 km route connects Klemensker and Årsballe: it starts on Mælkevejen, continues along Kongestien to Årsballe, and passes the meeting places Billen and Fuglemosen as well as Naturhuset. This gives you a choice of a shorter loop or a considerably longer route. Access to both trails may be temporarily affected by ground conditions or hunting.

History, nature and culture on Bornholm

A story about a mill also leads back to Årsballe: Tejn Mølle, also known as Melsted Mølle, was built there around 1800 and moved to Melsted in 2006. Bornholm’s food culture can be experienced elsewhere on the island. Bornholm’s first smokehouse opened in Gudhjem in 1866, and herring has been smoked there ever since. Hasle Smokehouse is the last smokehouse on Bornholm where fish is smoked in the traditional way, using open chimneys and alder wood.

Bornholm has other places of interest for nature and museum visits. Ekkodalen in Almindingen is Bornholm’s largest rift valley. The NaturBornholm experience centre features dinosaurs, live crocodiles, an aquarium and a bison exhibition; the exhibits on display may change. Covering 15 hectares, Bornholms Middelaldercenter is an open-air museum that brings 14th-century Bornholm to life in an engaging and interactive way.

The viewpoints offer different perspectives, too: Hammershus Visitor Centre provides panoramic views of Hammershus. From the cliffs above Opalsøen, the view takes in the surrounding area, the Baltic Sea and the ruins of Hammershus Castle. These landscape and cultural attractions are part of the wider destination of Bornholm and are distinct from the local facilities and trails in Årsballe.

Getting to Bornholm

Bornholm can be reached by ferry, plane, bus or train. The ferry crossing from Ystad to Bornholm takes one hour and 20 minutes. Check current connections and timetables before travelling, especially the ferry duration and schedule.
