Svängsta can be explored from two perspectives: as a place on the Mörrumsån, with routes through the river landscape, and as a town with a distinct industrial and educational history. When choosing your accommodation, it helps to first consider how you plan to spend your days: will you focus on walking and cycling, are you interested in nature and water, or would you like to include museums in your trip? The options range from a route over 30 kilometres long to exhibitions on local and school history.

River landscape and routes

The Mörrumsån flows through Svängsta and provides a useful reference point for finding your way around. The Mörrumsåns nedre dalgång nature reserve stretches from Mörrum in the south to Svängsta in the north. The Laxaleden also follows the river between Mörrum and Svängsta and passes through Svängsta; it is just over 30 kilometres long in total. This gives you a specific distance to use when planning your route. A cycling and walking trail also runs along the Mörrumsån. When choosing an active itinerary, you can therefore consider whether the Laxaleden’s stated distance or the river as a reference point for cycling and walking days is more important to you.

Places for activity and water

Svängstaparken is located in the centre of Svängsta, by the Mörrumsån, and the Sydostleden passes through the park. This also gives you a specific central location from which to explore the river. The Svängsta-Öjavad exercise trail starts at Skogsfalkens stuga in Öjavad. There are illuminated exercise loops around Abborrsjön. These route descriptions use different points of reference: a central park with a route running through it, a named starting point in Öjavad, and loops around a lake.

Sport fishing is possible at Aborrsjön. As regulations and access may change, check the current information before your visit. Hundsjön is a municipal swimming lake in the middle of Svängsta; check the current access arrangements before going for a swim. This lets you consider two different water activities: sport fishing at Aborrsjön and swimming at Hundsjön.

Industrial history in Svängsta

The history of local watchmaking includes several milestones: the Halda pocket watch factory was founded in Svängsta in 1887. In 1921, Carl August Borgström founded AB Urfabriken by the Mörrumsån in Svängsta, where pocket watches, telephone timers and taximeters were initially made. The two dates refer to different foundations and provide a timeline for the area’s industrial history.

The old factory was eventually converted into the ABU Museum, one of Sweden’s most significant industrial museums. At the museum, visitors can see how the sought-after pocket watches were made and experience machinery from the late 19th century. A visit thus connects the history of production with specific insights into manufacturing methods and historic machinery.

A glimpse into school history

Möllegårdens skolmuseum presents another side of local and regional history. It includes a classroom, a teacher’s home and an exhibition room with school materials from different periods. One exhibition is dedicated to all the schools in the municipality. The museum is housed in the oldest and best-preserved school building in Karlshamn Municipality. Its rooms and collections offer several perspectives on schooling: the classroom, the teacher’s living quarters and the development of school materials. Together with the ABU Museum, it offers a cultural contrast to the river routes and opportunities for exercise, without limiting your interests to just one type of outing.
