Sölvesborg: History, Art and Paths by the Water

Art and History in Special Buildings

Sölvesborgs konsthall is located in a 150-year-old grain and spirits warehouse. The building gives the visit a clear historical setting, while the art gallery provides a contemporary cultural focus.

Sölvesborgs museum is located at Skeppsbrogatan 6, between Stortorget and Fyra Årstiders Park. North of S:t Nicolai kyrka are the remains of a Carmelite monastery founded in 1486 and excavated in 1945; the finds are displayed in the museum. Those interested in the town's earlier history can therefore combine a museum visit with traces of the past here.

S:t Nicolai kyrka is Sölvesborg's only surviving medieval building. Construction of its oldest part, the chancel, began around the year 1300. In the early years of the 15th century, the vaults and walls were decorated with magnificent, partly burlesque paintings. Another notable example is Listers Härads Tingshus, designed by Gunnar Asplund and built between 1917 and 1921. The building is protected as a listed monument and attracts interested visitors from around the world.

Castle Ruins and Historic Townscape

The ruins of Sölvesborgs slott date from the 13th century. The castle was the largest and most important of the medieval fortifications in Eastern Denmark. Together with the adjoining castle park, Sölvesborgs slottsruin is well suited for a visit and a walk. In this way, the site adds another historic location to the town's religious and civic architectural heritage.

The Stadsvandring leads through Sölvesborg's cobblestone streets, lined with historic buildings. This perspective makes the town's history visible not only at individual attractions, but also throughout the townscape.

Paths by the Water and Through Nature

The first section of Blekingeleden begins at Sölvesborgs Resecentrum and leads down to the harbour, with views of Sölvesborg Bay and Sölvesborgsbron. Blekingeleden then continues through central Sölvesborg and onwards towards Ryssberget. This route offers a particularly clear sense of the landscape between the town, the bay and the areas beyond.

Sölvesborgsbron is 760 metres long and is one of Europe's longest pedestrian and cycle bridges. The bridge has a widened resting area with views of the water and the town, as well as opportunities for birdwatching. In addition, Havsparken runs from Brofästet along Hamngatan beside Sölvesborgsviken.

Other trails also begin in or pass through Sölvesborg: Banvallsleden begins at the railway station, while a section of Sydostleden runs through Sölvesborg between Ysane to the north of Sölvesborg and the town centre. Ryssbergets Naturreservat lies north of the town centre and can be reached on foot or by bicycle.
